The Fragrant Rose List

Rosa Mundi

Rosa gallica versicolor (Gallica, before 1659) – white striped with deep reddish pink. Unusual spicy fragrance with peppery top notes. This sport of the Apothecary Rose is probably grown more than any other Gallica. The dramatic petals dry well and retain their fragrance making them useful for sachets and potpourris. Short to medium spreading growth habit (a word of advice: don’t fertilize too heavily or the stripes will not be as pronounced). If grown on its own roots it aggressively suckers, forming dense hedges and thickets. A rose of great historical significance it is named after Rosamund, who was King Henry II’s mistress. Winter hardy to zone 4. Once blooming. Recommended by Tenor peggy in Wisconsin.
