The Fragrant Rose List

Souvenir du Doctor Jamain

(Hybrid Perpetual, 1865) – rich velvety red. The cupped blooms have an intense fragrance that has been likened to the Centifolia class. It has the typical lanky Hybrid Perpetual growth habit with long sprawling canes that can either be trained as a climber or pegged. Repeat bloom is infrequent unless pegged. On the plus side the canes are nearly thornless so training is a relatively easy task. The foliage is very prone to black spot so if you live where it is humid you’ll need to spray it with fungicides every 10 days. Winter hardy to zone 4.
